Best Locations for Winter Family Photo Sessions in Amsterdam

Winter in Amsterdam. The days are short, the skies are moody, it’s rainy, and it gets dark super early. But here's the thing — I actually love this for photo sessions. The light is soft, golden hour happens at a totally reasonable 3:30–4:30pm (finally, a time that works for families with little ones!), and the city takes on this beautiful atmospheric quality that you just don't get in summer.

So if you're thinking about a winter family photo session in Amsterdam — yes, let's do it. Here's where I love to shoot.

In-home sessions:

This is honestly my most recommended option for winter — especially for families with babies, toddlers, or newborns. You're warm, kids are comfortable in their own space, and there's no rushing to get everyone bundled up and out the door.

I love in-home sessions. There's something special about capturing a family in their own space — their couch, their kitchen, their decor and personal items, their kids' rooms. It's personal and real in a way that outdoor sessions aren't. And kids? They are always at their most relaxed and authentic at home. Which usually means the best photos.

If you have good natural light in your home, an in-home winter session can be absolutely stunning. Not sure if your home works? Send me some photos and I'll let you know! What you think might not be enough light, might be plenty for me. :)

Vondelpark:

Vondelpark in winter is beautiful — bare trees, wide open paths, and that classic Amsterdam park feel. The light filters through the branches in the most gorgeous way during golden hour, and the park is large enough that we can almost always find a quiet spot away from crowds. There is also always the option to pop out of the park for some quick street shots as well.

It's also just…easy. Parking nearby, easy to get to by bike or tram, and familiar enough that families feel comfortable rather than stressed trying to find the location. Comfort shows in photos — always.

Dress warmly and in layers — it can get cold and windy in Vondelpark in winter. But bundle up and I promise the photos will be worth it.

The Jordaan:

The Jordaan is honestly one of my favorite places in Amsterdam — not just for photos. The narrow streets, the canal bridges, the little courtyards…it's just so beautiful and so uniquely Amsterdam.

In winter the Jordaan takes on a magical quality. String lights appear along the streets, the canal reflections are stunning, and golden hour light bouncing off those historic canal houses? Absolutely stunning.

And while we're in the area, the Damrak canal houses are absolutely worth including in your session. Those iconic colorful facades reflecting off the water are probably the most recognizable image of Amsterdam — and for good reason. They photograph beautifully in any season, but in winter the moody skies and soft light make them even more special. It's one of those spots that never gets old.

Sessions in the Jordaan and along the Damrak work best early morning, or at golden hour — the warm light on the brick facades is something special. We'll wander the streets, cross a few bridges, and find the hidden spots that make this neighborhood so special. Kids actually love exploring here too…there's always something to look at.

Hortus Botanicus:

If you're looking for a warm, lush, indoor option for winter family photos — Hortus Botanicus is it. One of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, it's tucked right into the heart of Amsterdam and honestly feels like stepping into another world entirely. The glasshouses are warm, green, and filled with tropical plants…on a grey, cold winter day it feels a little like escaping to somewhere tropical. (Chicago friends — think Garfield Park Conservatory vibes!)

The light inside the glasshouses is soft and diffused through the glass, which makes for really beautiful, natural-looking photos. Kids love it here too — there's so much to look at and explore, which means genuine expressions and curiosity rather than forced smiles.

A professional photography permit is required and must be arranged in advance directly with Hortus Botanicus- I will purchase the permit, and add it to your invoice. As for clothing — skip the green tones so you don't blend into all that gorgeous foliage. Pops of warm color look especially beautiful against the greenery.

Amsterdamse Bos:

If you want a real nature feel without leaving the city, Amsterdamse Bos is your spot. It's a huge forested park on the edge of Amsterdam — think tall trees, wide open paths, and a real sense of being out in nature even though you're technically still in the city.

In winter Amsterdamse Bos is peaceful and atmospheric. The bare trees create beautiful natural frames, and on misty winter mornings it has an almost fairytale quality. Definitely a good spot for families who want something a little different from the classic Amsterdam canal backdrop, and also want to be outdoors.

Golden hour here is beautiful — the light filters through the trees in a way that is just gorgeous. Bring warm layers, good walking shoes/boots, and some hot chocolate.

What About Rain?

Amsterdam in winter means rain is always a possibility (probability??). I keep a close eye on forecasts leading up to your session and will always communicate with you about the plan. Light, intermittant rain we can usually work around — umbrellas can actually be fun props! Heavy rain we'll reschedule. I want your session to be enjoyable, not miserable.
