11 Fun Indoor Winter Activities for Toddlers in Chicago

Winter in Chicago with a toddler? I get it—it’s cold, it’s gray, and your little one has way too much energy to stay cooped up inside. I was in the same boat, wondering how to keep my 1-year-old entertained without being able to go for walks or to the park. But after some research (and a few trial runs), I found that Chicago has plenty of fun, family-friendly places to escape the cold. So, if you’re looking for the best indoor winter activities for toddlers in Chicago, here are my top picks!

1. Kohl Children's Museum- Glenview IL

I took my 1-year-old here a few weeks ago, and she loved it. This place is designed for little explorers (which mine most definitely is), with interactive exhibits that are perfect for curious toddlers. From a mini grocery store to a hands-on water play area, there’s so much to keep them engaged.

Insider Tip: It gets busy on weekends, so try going early or on a weekday if you can. Parking is free and super easy!

2. Garfield Park Conservatory- Garfield Park, Chicago

One of my go-to spots for winter family photo sessions—and soon to be one of my go-to spots for keeping my toddler entertained! This lush, warm indoor garden is like stepping into a tropical paradise. Toddlers love wandering the pathways, looking at the plants, and checking out the fish in the koi pond. There is also a children’s garden room with a small playground, but unfortunately it’s closed right now due to construction.

Insider Tip: It’s stroller-friendly, free to enter (donations appreciated), and a great place to let your little one roam without a snowsuit.

3. Navy Pier Children’s Museum- Chicago

A Chicago classic…the Children’s Museum at Navy Pier is packed with hands-on activities for toddlers, from climbing structures to water play areas. Plus, you can make a whole outing of it—grab lunch, watch the boats, and take in the lake views.

Insider Tip: Buy tickets online in advance to save time at the entrance.

4. Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum- Lincoln Park, Chicago

This museum is perfect for little nature lovers! The highlight? The butterfly haven—your toddler will be mesmerized watching butterflies flutter all around.
